Flower import with 100% freshness

The science behind flower transportation and an interview with our Dutch supplier

How do we transport flowers from the market so that they arrive fresh and in top condition? Transporting flowers is a process that requires precision and thorough logistical coordination. Flowers are not only fragile, but also highly sensitive to temperature and humidity, which means that strict conditions must be met during the journey to ensure they arrive at customers in perfect condition.

Transport conditions: Tailor-made trucks

For the transportation of flowers we use specially build trucks that ensure constant temperature and optimum humidity. Any deviation can have a negative impact on the freshness and quality of the flowers, therefore it is necessary to adhere to the specific rules.

Trucks and their specifics:

  • Cooling systems: Flowers require precisely regulated temperatures, usually between 2°C and 7°C, depending on the species. The correct temperature slows down the metabolic processes of the plants, and therefore preserve their freshness.
  • Protection against damage: Flowers are carefully stored in boxes with fillers, which ensure their stability during transportation.
  • Monitoring: Modern technologies allow for real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity, which helps minimize the risk of any problems.
Arrived on time and in perfect condition: Delivery of flowers around Czechia

After the trucks arrive at our warehouse, the meticulous process of sorting and preparing flowers for distribution begins. Our warehouses are equipped with air-conditioned rooms, which also maintain the conditions necessary to maintain the freshness of the flowers. Each order is then custom packed according to customer needs, be it cut flowers, potted plants or decorations and accessories. In addition to flower delivery, we offer the possibility of in person shopping of fresh flowers at our Cash & Carry branch in Prague.

Few words from Holland: Interview with Dean Zuidgeest

To better understand the importance of logistics and flower quality, we partnered with Dean Zuidgeest, one of St. Gabriel's suppliers, whose family-owned company Villa Gerbera & Villa Curcuma is an icon of the Dutch flower industry.

What impact does the flower industry have on the Dutch economy and the environment?

“Flowers are among the largest export products of the Netherlands. Flower companies often provide heat waste or electricity to nearby villages. The industry is also becoming more and more focuses on sustainable production. We are using geothermal energy, switching to LED lighting and reducing water consumption thanks to technologies that use only rainwater.“

How would you describe the cultural significance of flowers in the Netherlands?

“Flowers are an important part of the lives of many Dutch people. We are proud of our Heineken beer and Gouda cheese, but in my opinion flowers are the most typical Dutch product. In addition, our flower fields attract millions of tourists every year, for example, Keukenhof is visited by about 1.5 million people annually.“

What does it mean to you that your flowers travel around the world?

“It's amazing to see our flowers in flower shops or at major events such as fashion shows in Dubai or Mass services in the Vatican. When I travel, I always like to go to local flower shops and it's great to see that our flowers have been loved by customers around the world.“

Was it difficult for you to adapt to the family business, or did it come naturally to you?

“It was natural for me because I grew up among the flowers. As a child I spent time in the family business, even as a baby I was in a baby cot right in the flower hall while my parents worked. During the school holidays, I was always in our greenhouse, and all this led me to develop a deep passion for flowers. Later I went to do two specialized horticultural studies which in total took seven years.“

Do you have any advice for flowerlovers on how to keep their new goodies fresh as long as possible?

“Specifically, gerberas need to be stored in the cold, regularly cutting their stems and adding a drop of chlorine to the water. Curcumas needs warmer conditions above 12 °C and regular water changes.“

Wholesaler of flowers that bet on first-class quality

Through carefully set logistics processes and cooperation with renowned suppliers such as Villa Gerbera, we ensure that every flower arrives to our customers in perfect condition. In this way, we want to contribute to flowers decorating your homes and bringing the joy and beauty to everyday life.

One of the key advantages of our cooperation with Villa Gerbera is the speed of delivery. Flowers are picked fresh in the morning, delivered to our logistics center in Rijnsburg at noon, and the very next morning they are available in our Prague store. This means that our customers receive flowers that have been cut less than 24 hours ago – ensuring top quality and maximum freshness.
